You bless your unsheltered community.
Thanks to our generous community partner, Midwest Food Bank, AZFH received an incredible pallet of high-quality new and returned shoes to distribute to our unsheltered neighbors. Over two days—September 17th and 18th—our mobile outreach team distributed over 100 pairs of shoes in Mesa and Phoenix.
Each recipient was overjoyed to receive a fresh pair of shoes, and of course, we made sure to include new socks with every pair!
Our small but mighty team of volunteers picked up and distributed the entire load using their personal vehicles. This is just one reason we’re actively fundraising for an outreach van—to expand our reach and serve more people with dignity and care.
Why Shoes and Socks Matter
For people experiencing homelessness, foot health is a critical but often overlooked issue. Many walk miles daily to access food, shelter, and services—often in ill-fitting or worn-out shoes. Without proper footwear and clean socks, they face serious health risks including:
- Trench foot, caused by prolonged exposure to wet conditions
- Fungal infections, blisters, and ulcers
- Polyneuropathy, a nerve condition that can lead to unnoticed injuries
- Frostbite and cellulitis, especially in colder months
Clean, dry socks are one of the most requested items at shelters, yet they’re rarely donated. Providing new socks and shoes not only protects physical health—it also restores dignity and shows our unsheltered neighbors that they are seen, valued, and loved.
The Impact
The heartfelt thank yous and kind words from those we served reminded our volunteers why we do this work. Every pair of shoes and socks is more than a donation—it’s a step toward hope, healing, and restoration.
“Seeing the joy on the faces of those receiving new shoes reminds me that every bit of effort and sacrifice is worth it. It’s a powerful reminder that hope can be delivered through simple acts of kindness—and that no one is truly forgotten.”
