The Growing Hunger Crisis in Arizona
When Families Must Choose Between Food and Housing—and How Our Community Is Responding
Food insecurity in Arizona is no longer just a challenge—it is a rapidly escalating crisis driven by rising costs, federal program cuts, and economic instability. Across our state, more families than ever are being forced to make impossible decisions:
Pay rent or buy groceries.
The Reality Right Now
More than 963,000 Arizonans—including nearly 294,000 children—face food insecurity, and that number continues to rise as inflation and federal support are reduced.
At the same time:
- Rent continues to outpace income
- Grocery costs remain elevated
- Assistance programs are shrinking
Families who once made it by are now struggling—quietly and consistently.
Inflation Is Driving the Crisis
In recent years:
- Arizona’s cost of living has climbed above the national average
- Rent has surged while wages have barely increased
- Households are paying significantly more each month just to survive
For many families, income simply cannot keep up with basic needs.
Federal Cuts Are Making It Worse
Recent changes to SNAP (food assistance) have reduced access for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans. As benefits shrink and eligibility tightens:
- More families are losing support
- Food banks are seeing record demand
- Community organizations are being asked to fill an ever-growing gap
The Reality Families Are Facing
Families are no longer choosing between wants—they are choosing between survival needs.
When money runs short:
- Rent is paid first
- Utilities come next
- Food becomes the sacrifice
This leads to:
- Skipped meals
- Empty cupboards
- Increased stress and health risks
How AZFH Is Responding
At Arizona’s Family to the Homeless (AZFH), we are seeing this crisis firsthand—and stepping up in powerful ways.
Expanded Community Outreach (Since Late 2025)
As need increased, AZFH expanded outreach efforts and formed partnerships to better serve the community.
Through our weekly Wash With Care events at a local laundromat, we provide support to homeless individuals and struggling families by offering:
- Food and meal kits
- Clothing and essential supplies
- Hygiene items
- Transit tickets to help individuals access jobs, services, and shelter
We also help stock the small community pantry shelves at this location whenever additional donations are available—ensuring families have access to food even outside of event days.
This location has become a vital hub of support for the community.
Strengthening Street Outreach
AZFH has expanded our homeless street outreach program, delivering:
- Food
- Water
- Clothing
- Survival essentials
directly to individuals who may not have access to traditional services.
Heat Relief Efforts (2026)
In 2026, AZFH joined the Maricopa County Heat Relief Network to respond to extreme Arizona temperatures.
We now provide:
- Water
- Electrolyte beverages
- Sunscreen
- Life-saving heat relief supplies
We also share these supplies with smaller outreach teams, extending our reach and helping more organizations serve the community safely during extreme heat.
Why This Work Matters More Than Ever
Right now:
- Demand is increasing faster than available resources
- More families are falling through eligibility gaps
- Local nonprofits are becoming the last line of support
AZFH is committed to meeting this moment—but we cannot do it alone.
